The Bishops

For their first Christmas in their home, it only felt natural to have a cozy, intimate day around the fireplace while a small ham cooked in the oven and sparkling cider made the family of three feel fancier than a partridge in a pear tree. While it wasn’t the first Christmas Jenny and her wife of one year spent together, it certainly felt like it since they weren’t in Hawaii again. We’ve gone four times in the past year! There were talks about buying a small cottage on the beach as soon as the current house’s finances were under control. Jenny was a firm believer in sticking to her accountant’s advice. If the woman said, “Please, Jen, don’t buy more than one house in a year…” she was inclined to listen.

Besides, seeing the warm smile on her wife’s face every time Nicole looked in her direction was more than worth staying home for a few days. The days were short, the weather dreary, and the TV specials more boring than usual… well, Jenny and Nicole knew how to spend some time alone at home. That was when mother-in-law Linda wasn’t by, however. Honestly, it was a miracle that Linda was spending a couple days at home with the girls since she was such a busy lady these days. Nicole had more than one reason to smile. If it wasn’t for her mother’s cancer still being in remission, it was her glorious return to the social sphere.

“I heard the darndest thing.” Linda turned down another pour of sparkling cider as Jenny made the short rounds in the cozy living room. A real fire blazed in the petite wood stove, and a fake one loomed on the TV hanging nearby. Jenny tugged on the collar of her turtleneck as she bypassed the professional print of her naked wife bedecked in jewels, diamonds, and gold, as befitting the modelesque wife of a hotshot accessories designer. “Did you know that Dick Van Dyke had to pay Walt Disney to be in ‘Mary Poppin’s’?”

Nicole looked up from her magazine. “Where did you hear something like that? Sounds absurd. He is that movie.”

“It was in an interview he gave for the new movie! Can you believe it?”

“No.”

Linda looked up at Jenny, who fixed one of the Christmas ornaments currently pulling the whole branch down. “Did you ever see that movie in the theater? Absolutely wonderful.”

Jenny sheepishly averted her gaze. “No. Can’t say I ever did.” She stepped back from the tree and wiped her hands together. “Not sure I saw the whole movie in full, either. Movies weren’t a common thing when I was a kid.” Depended on the foster family. Some of them tried a little too hard to impress Jenny, and others either had too many kids under their care to afford it… or they didn’t care at all.

A knock at the door saved Jenny from the embarrassment of trying to explain why she saw few movies as a kid. Linda leaped up from her chair with a grin on her fair face.
